Baseball team successful in early opener
But California team sweeps doubleheader the next day
By Bridget Fargen
In its earliest start in program history, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team won its season opener, defeating St. Mary’s Gaels 2-0 Friday, Feb. 10, in Moraga, Calif.
Robert Mickalkiewicz’s seven shutout innings, along with RBI singles from Joe Nowicki and Jeremy Wilson gave the Panthers their first win in a season opener since 1997.
With no outs in the fourth inning, sophomore Jesse Hart and junior Rob Brockel delivered back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third. A double-play ball by the Gaels nearly ended the Panthers scoring hopes, but Wilson came through with an RBI-single to score Hart.
The Panthers scored again in the seventh inning when Nowicki’s line drive single at the pitcher brought home junior Kyle Silver. With two outs UWM almost added another run, but pinch-runner Tyler Schill was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
St. Mary’s answers back
After UWM’s season opening victory on Friday, St. Mary’s took both games from the Panthers in Saturday’s doubleheader.
UWM jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added one more in the second, to take a 4-1 lead. The Gaels, however, responded with 16 unanswered runs to give Milwaukee its first loss.
St. Mary’s pounded the Panthers’ pitching, scoring four runs in the fifth, five runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh.
Milwaukee struggled offensively, tallying only seven hits on the game while leaving five men on base.
In the second game of their doubleheader, UWM fell behind early when starter Tim Hoy gave up three runs on four hits.
The Panthers bounced back in the second and third innings after Nowicki and Hart made it a one-run game. But St. Mary’s would allow no more, adding two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Gaels pitcher Michael Nisco threw a complete game for St. Mary’s, allowing only five hits. UWM starting pitcher Tim Hoy threw six innings, giving up three runs, while relief pitcher Kelby Mack allowed two runs off two hits.
The Panthers return to action this weekend at the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic in Evansville, Ind.
