Union smoking ban starts
Students compliant; no tickets so far
By Ryan Cardarella
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union smoking ban that went into effect over the weekend, beginning on April 1, has gone over smoothly and without incident, said Union Operations Director Scott Gore.
“Students have been well-behaved and compliant thus far,” Gore said.
No tickets or warnings have been issued by Union staff or UWM police as students have adhered to the new policy to this point, Gore said.
Students who are found to be in violation of the ban will be informed of the policy and asked to put out their cigarettes. Warnings and fines would only be used as a “last resort” for resistant students, said Assistant Director of Union Operations Thomas Viel.
Client Services and other Union staff members are being relied upon to report any violations of the smoking policy, but no additional staff will be required to enforce the ban.
