Minimalist approach to ‘Purchase’
By Rory Sazama
The lights dim and the actors take their places. Jim Taylor, played by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee alumnus Joe Fransee, and his theatre company stand before a funding committee asking for money to finance their play in “Louisiana Purchase.”
When asked for a performance of the play by the committee, Jim begins assigning roles in a hurry and the cast launches into a pseudo impromptu performance of the play-within-a-play.
What seemed most striking about this modern musical, was the extreme minimalist approach to stage props: two folding tables and a handful of chairs. The simplicity of the set is successful in retaining all focus on the stellar cast of actors, all of whom take on multiple roles with a keen sense of adaptation as the play unfolds.
A well-paced story, mixed with a dose of song and dance, political satire and an unconventional love story, make the play worth the trip down to the south side of town.
