Watching grass grow is easier on the eyes

‘Pick of Destiny’ sluggish, not funny

By Michael Maniaci

Tenacious D comes to the silver screen in “Tenacious D in ‘The Pick of Destiny.’” This is Tenacious D’s first venture into the movies.

The band is a two-man rock group composed of Jack Black and Kyle Gass. They came out with their first album in 2001 and have gone on tour across the country with original songs.

“Pick of Destiny” or “PoD” is about the mythological origins of how Tenacious D rose to their current glory. The story starts out with a young Black yearning to be a great rocker.

His father naturally disagrees with this as he proceeds to tear down rock memorabilia in his son’s room. Black, after a conversation with a famous rocker, decides to leave home in search of California and stardom.

The rest of the plot centers on the band setting out to obtain the “Pick of Destiny,” a tooth from Satan. Along the way they split up with a hilarious scene involving Black and mushrooms.

The main focus of the film is on pot jokes. In fact, the only way that the movie seems to be funny is if you smoked up before coming into the theater. Giving nods to “A Clockwork Orange” and countless road trip movies, the movie travels along at a sluggish pace.

Cameos from Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller and Amy Poehler add some depth to the movie but can only help out so much. The problem is that the movie seems to be an underwhelming experience; my journey on the public bus system to see the movie itself seemed more epic than “PoD.”

Tenacious D should focus their creative power on songs, not movies.
