The NFL’s final cut-down day requires each team to trim its roster to 53 players. Ted Thompson and the Green Bay Packers couldn’t seem to get rid of enough players.

As always, the list of cuts includes a plethora of recognizable names mixed in with guys nobody has ever heard of. You might know a few of the following ex-Packers.

RB Najeh Davenport

The man notoriously known for — ahem — self-fertilizing the closet of a fellow student at the University of Miami received a taste of his own medicine when the Packers dumped him on Sept. 2.

In four years with Green Bay, Davenport-A-John totaled over 1,000 yards on an average of just under five yards a carry, despite barely managing 100 yards in 2005 prior to a season-ending injury.

A poor pre-season, along with the emergence of Samkon Gado and Noah Herron, led the Packers to flush out their former No. 2 back (no pun intended).

WR Rod Gardner

The Packers claimed the former first-round draft pick off waivers last season and were hoping that he’d re-emerge as the deep threat he was once thought to be. At 6-foot-2-inches, Gardner still has his size, but he lacked explosiveness and aggression throughout training camp.

After seemingly disappearing on the field all summer, Gardner saw his name disappear from the Packers’ opening day roster.

WR Cory Rodgers

Thompson spent a fourth-round draft pick this year on Texas Christian University standout Cory Rodgers based solely on his kick returning skills.

In the end, Thompson received no return on his investment. Rodgers’ inability to field a punt eliminated the possibility of a Rodgers-to-Rodgers connection once Brett Favre retires … in 10 years.

DE Kenny Peterson

The Packers waited patiently for the oft-injured end to play a full season and show the team what he could do, and after spending the majority of his first two years on the sidelines, Peterson did just that in 2005. Unfortunately, the Packers weren’t thrilled by his performance.

Peterson posted three sacks and forced a couple of fumbles, but the powers-that-be in Green Bay decided he wasn’t worth the wait.

DE Dave Tollefson

A seventh-round selection out of Northwest Missouri in this year’s draft, Tollefson joins Rodgers as a Ted Thompson draft bust, despite never taking a snap in a regular season NFL game.

LB Roy Manning

Manning signed with the Packers prior to the 2005 season as an undrafted free agent and proved to be a solid backup with a lot of potential. There really was no reason to cut him.

As for the guys you may or may not have heard of, and may or may never hear of again, Green Bay also sent the following players packing: TE Zac Alcorn, S Atari Bigby, S Tra Boger, WR Carlton Brewster, FB Ben Brown, K E.J. Cochrane, CB Patrick Dendy, WR Chris Francies, LB Tim Goodwell, CB Jason Horton, CB Antonio Malone, S Jeremy Modkins, G Siitupe Peko and C Pete Traynor.
