Squirreling away summer
Games to save your nuts for
By Darin Kwilinski
In the hope that I’ll motivate you to work hard this summer, here is a list of games you should save your money for in the fall.
Summer is prime time for a few things: movies, high temperatures and seasonal jobs. Gamers tend to stay away from physical labor—their small, fragile frames are better suited for IT work, but sometimes it’s inevitable.
Going out and getting a landscaping or roofing job does not sound the least bit inviting, especially since I did that during my high school summers. So, I sympathize with those of you who still do that kind of work.
In order to get the daily fix of videogame, however, cash is needed. Regrettably, securing a 40-hour-a-week, $9 an hour, slave labor summer job is almost always necessary (save for you smart ones who nab a paid summer internship).
In the hope that I’ll motivate you to work hard this summer, here is a list of games you should save your money for in the fall.
Far Cry 2
Platform: PC
Genre: First-Person Shooter
The sequel to the fairly successful FPS, “Far Cry 2” is a far cry from the original (I’m going to get beat up over that pun). While the first game revolved around a massive island and a protagonist who wore a bright red shirt in a bright green jungle, the sequel takes you roaming in Africa. There you have the task of taking out two warlords by pitting them against each other. The gorgeous graphics will only help your dream of going on a safari for bad guys.
Spore
Platform: Multiple
Genre: Open-world Evolution Simulation
This game has been on everyone’s radar for quite a while now. Well, you only have a short time to wait, as it’s slated for a September release. You can finally create that amphibious monster that you drew and named “Grangor the Grizzly-Fish” in the third grade. From there you can populate your planet with weaker, less-evolved species created by other players. You watch Grangor do what he does best: hunt, torment, ravage and eat.
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
Platform: Multiple
Genre: Third-person Awesomeness
Forget it, fanboy. The third movie isn’t happening on the silver screen (I’m just as saddened as you, trust me). Instead, it’s happening in the video game medium. Dan Aykroyd himself has stated this is the best he can do, seeing as how Bill Murray won’t do a reprise of his role as Peter Venkman in film. So now we get all four original Ghostbusters in a video game, with you, the player, testing out a few fresh gadgets as a new recruit for Egon and Ray. No matter what happens, the game will be perfect. Perfect, I tell you!
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
Platform: Multiple / Nintendo DS
Genre: Action Adventure / Role-Playing Game
I know, I know. Sonic seems washed up. I, too, have been disappointed with most of his latest outings. Have faith in my prediction fellow gamers. Since he has been reborn, if you will, in the latest “Super Smash Bros.” our speedy friend will pull out all the stops for his latest next outings.
“Unleashed” is supposedly a Sonic game that returns to true form with a mixture of side-scrolling and open-world movement. “The Dark Brotherhood” treads new ground as an RPG, which is so intriguing that I may buy a DS, depending on how it scores.
Prototype
Platform: Multiple
Genre: Third-person
If you haven’t heard of “Prototype” yet, you have now. Playing as an amnesiac, mutated, shape-shifting bad-ass, you jump around New York City trying to figure out your past. You can either go stealth, a la “Assassin’s Creed,” or cause a ruckus like you do in “Grand Theft Auto,” which in turn gets the military trying to gun you down like the freak you are…errr, play as.
I have given you a light at the end of the hot, sweaty, summery tunnel. Work hard, young ones, and know that your mindless labor will be rewarded with mindless entertainment.
