The privacy is great. I can watch movies ALL night if I want to. And I can just walk out of my room and see my suitemates if I'm ever bored or lonely.
University Housing: Thank you for letting us feature your room for our last issue of the semester. I know it was a long time ago, but when you first moved in, did you have a certain idea of how you wanted to decorate your room?
Rachel Holcomb: I actually didn't like my room when I moved in! I thought it was too big. I didn't even know what to do with the space. But there was a lot of wall, and that made me happy, 'cause I have a TON of posters. All I knew was, I wanted color, covered walls and ambience, which is why I have a few lamps (the orange one is my favorite), and never use the overhead.
UH: Many girls in Sandburg would die for a closet that size. But it doesn’t look like you have much in the way of clothes? Are you one of those rare girls who hate shopping?
RH: Yeah, I always had a lot of clothes until I got this closet! All my friends (male and female) were asking if they could use my closet for storage. I don't like shopping, though. And I kind of tend to wear the same few items of clothing....
UH: What is your favorite Johnny Depp movie? What is your least favorite?
RH: Uuuhhh.... I really like “Don Juan Demarco,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Cry-Baby,” “Benny & Joon” and, of course, “Pirates.” (Though, I was a fan BEFORE Captain Jack.) I also love “21 Jump Street” (his TV series).
UH: We here at the section heard that you are into “mood” lighting. Where did you get that orange lamp?
RH: IKEA , in Pittsburgh. LOVE IT! It gives the room a nice glow. I want the purple one, too.
UH: Would you consider yourself a neat freak? Explain.
RH: Yeah, definitely. I can be a slob, but I'm kind of OCD as well. It's strange. Usually EVERYTHING has to be put away. It's easier here than at home-because I have so much less here.
UH: What is your favorite accessory in your room?
RH: Like I said, probably my orange lamp. Do posters count as an accessory? And my TV of course! (Self-professing addict.)
UH: Do you do a lot of cooking in your room now that you live in East Tower, or do you do more microwaveable meals?
RH: I almost never cook. Noodles or rice on the stove sometimes, or microwave stuff. I usually still eat in the caf, I'm ashamed to admit.
UH: How would you describe your personal style?
RH: Quirky, maybe a bit eclectic. Busy, I think would be the perfect word.
UH: What is one thing that you cannot live without?
RH: My TV and my iPod.
UH: What is your favorite part about having your own room? Do you ever get lonely?
RH: No, the privacy is great. I can watch movies ALL night if I want to. And I can just walk out of my room and see my suitemates if I'm ever bored or lonely. I'm a pretty private person, though.
UH: What is your favorite part about living in Sandburg?
RH: The convenience of having everything right here, and just one bill.
UH: How has East Tower been beneficial for you this year? Would you have rather lived in a house, or are you satisfied with your decision to stay in Sandburg?
RH: I really liked living in East. I was surrounded by all my friends, and I had a lock on my bathroom door! BEST PART!!
UH: Anything you would like to add about your dorm-mates, living situation or Sandburg as a whole?
RH: I'm transferring for next year, and I won't be living with them again. So I want to say that I loved living with all of my suitemates (most of the time!), and I'll really miss the craziness.
