Castles made of sand

Bigger, better sandcastle competition to be held

By Marlyn Fink

“We’re opening the competition to anyone in Milwaukee this year” – UWM architecture student Kristin Reichart

Warm weather will soon vanish for another year and there’s no better way to say bon voyage to the sunshine than heading out to the Sands and Bands Festival this Saturday at Bradford Beach.

Each fall, the Milwaukee chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) organizes a sandcastle building competition. But this year AIAS has teamed up with Marquette University and Bradford Beach to host a much larger event with more activities.

In addition to the sand castle competition, Marquette student and alumni musical acts will be playing. A beach volleyball tournament will also be held at the event.

Sandcastle chair and current University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee architecture student Kristin Reichart encourages everyone to get out and get involved with the event. “We’re opening the competition to anyone in Milwaukee this year,” she says. “I’m hoping for a lot of people. It should be huge.” Last year the competition brought in around 300 participants, but with the other activities included this year, Reichart hopes to quadruple that number. If you’re planning on entering the competition, Reichart advises that participants arrive at the beach around 8 or 9 Saturday morning to register, as the castle building starts at 8 a.m. and ends promptly at 3 p.m.

She also suggests bringing your own shovels, buckets and any other materials to help assist in the construction of a potential sandcastle.

UWM architecture professors Mark Keane and Linda Krause will judge the castles and the first place winner will receive over $100 in prizes. There will also be a raffle open to everyone attending, a t-shirt sale and concession stands.

“It's a chance to be creative in a new medium, get some fresh air and enjoy our beautiful beaches, work collaboratively, and have fun,” said Linda Krause, UWM Associate Professor of Architechture and Urban Planning. Krause will be one of the judges at the sandcastle competition.

There is no entrance fee for the event, however the cost to enter the competition is $12 per team and teams can have up to ten members.

If you don’t have a team but wish to join, organizers of the event can set you up with a team.
