“With this service, UWM students can stay more informed by WUWM and NPR, receiving the top news stories more directly on their mobile phones” – Cynthia Akey, Marketing Specialist for WUWM Radio
Milwaukee Public Radio (WUWM 89.7) is conveniently bringing local and national news and weather to mobile devices, thanks to a new co-branded service featuring WUWM and National Public Radio (NPR) news.
NPR Mobile web sends pictures, videos and sound to cell phones and other handheld devices like Blackberries. And now WUWM has created a similar service to offer users local news and weather.
According to WUWM Radio marketing specialist Cynthia Akey, Milwaukee Public Radio started working with NPR in June to join the program. WUWM Manager of Broadcast Operations Tom May worked exclusively to include local programming and UWM’s Innovative Weather.
To access the program, simply visit www.wuwm.com on your mobile device and gain access to NPR News, WUWM news, Lake Effect stories, and Innovative Weather.
Alternatively, anyone who seeks NPR news content can simply call 414.326.9798 for the NPR Hourly Newscast, NPR Top Story, NPR Story of the Day and the NPR Business Story of the Day.
“With this service, UWM students can stay more informed by WUWM and NPR, receiving the top news stories more directly on their mobile phones,” Akey said.
All mobile devices with internet capabilities can use the services. Many cell phones are capable of MP3 audio, which would provide access to NPR and WUWM audio content, but this of course depends on the model of each phone.
The services are free, but separate charges might occur depending on the Internet and phone service provider. In addition, any user donations would be warmly accepted, and suggested.
“Listener contributions are our single largest source of funding,” Akey said. “We realize students’ budgets are tight, but both of these services allow listeners to make a donation to WUWM via cell phone or on NPR Mobile Voice by pressing the # button.”
