Grant in memory of Munz seeking donations

“He touched so many lives in so many different ways and we wanted to keep his generous spirit alive” – Event coordinator Amanda Lulewicz
In memory of Joe Munz, the 2nd annual Joe Munz Scholarship Fundraiser will be taking place this Friday, Oct. 10 in honor of the UW-Milwaukee student who was killed two years ago.
The event this will take place in the same spot as last year’s fundraiser, in the upstairs party room at G Daddy’s BBC Bar and Grill located on the corner of North and Farwell Avenues, beginning at 8pm.
Music and drink specials will all be offered all night, along with door prizes and t-shirt sales. All the profits will go directly towards the scholarship in Munz’s name, according to one of the event’s coordinators Mike Kennedy.
Munz, who had just turned 21, was shot and killed on Oct. 10, 2006 while delivering for Jimmy John’s to a neighborhood in Riverwest. Now friends are taking action, raising awareness of crime on campus in hopes of saving lives and remembering Munz.
Event coordinator Amanda Lulewicz started the fundraiser in hopes to remember her good friend Joe.
“He touched so many lives in so many different ways and we wanted to keep his generous spirit alive,” Lulewicz said. “We thought the scholarship would be a perfect way to do that.”
The Joe Munz Memorial Scholarship will not only keep Munz’s spirit alive, but make a difference in students’ lives. The scholarship will be awarded to two UWM students each year who exemplify Munz’s character.
“Our hope is to truly make a difference in their lives, the same way Munz made a difference in ours,” Lulewicz said.
Event coordinator Jason Mayes believes this year more people will come in honor of Munz, who was described as a giant teddy bear and one of the kindest guys he’d met.
“Joe knew so many people around campus, and also touched so many different people from his story, and just how he was,” Mayes said. “I think we're pretty excited to see where this will go since the first one, and to make everyone after this better than the last."
Last year the fundraiser collected just under $8,000, which they expect to increase this year, according to Kennedy.
“We realize that people don’t have expendable cash, but hopefully they will come and donate what they can so we can keep Joe’s name alive,” Kennedy said.
The scholarship will be given to students who worked during high school to save for college, plan on working during college, and have worked hard to make their community a safe place to live.
Two students who have received the scholarships in 2008 will be announced in November and the Joe Munz Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to two freshmen each year. Students can apply for the scholarship through the UWM Foundation.
