One month in

Two freshmen spill the beans about the dorms

By Michelle Sauer

Both say that overall the experience has been an all-right one, but still have no idea where the semester will lead.

A month has passed and residence hall students are settling in. Freshmen Devan Leistikow and Chris Kubczak recently shared their dorm-life experiences up to this point.

On the dorm rooms

Devan Leistikow – I go home on weekends, but it’s not terrible living there. I’ve never really had to deal with living with someone before, which is working out just fine compared to other horror stories I’ve heard people with new roommates tell me.
Michelle Sauer- Yeah, I remember being excited. I also remember how hot the rooms got.
Chris Kubczak – They got really warm at the beginning of the semester, but are easy enough to cool down.
*DL* – Yeah, I just open my window and get a pretty decent breeze to cool things off.
*CK* – Same here. Otherwise the space is bigger than I thought it’d be. It’s different than any other living situation I’ve been in or probably will be in, but it’s not bad at all really.

On the amenities

*CK* – I really like that everything is free, but the internet connection is kind of slow, which sucks.
*MS* – I loved that we had free cable.
*CK* – I like to play video games more than watch TV, which is why I’m really bummed about the whole internet connection thing. I play video games a lot between classes, which is awesome.
*DL* – I’m on my computer most of the time, so free internet is a plus. I don’t watch TV much either, but I’m sure it’s great for people who do use it. I’m learning to make do with what they give me, which is a lot actually.

On the food

*DL* – It’s not terrible. There are some pretty good things, but also some pretty not so good things.
*CK* – I’ve maybe eaten at the cafeteria once or twice. I order delivery a lot. I wish that Palms had cheaper prices.
*DL* – I think everywhere on campus and in the dorms that residents should get a nice discount, like with the cafeteria.
*MS* – Dormers do tend to get quite hungry don’t they?
DL* and *CK – (laugh) Yeah.

On the freedom

(Both of their faces lit up at the word “freedom”)
*CK* – I love having freedom to do what I want.
*DL* – At first it was weird. I mean, I realized I was fending for myself, which wasn’t scary, just different.
*CK* – Mhm, I definitely agree with that. It’s different, but not bad at all!

On the people

*CK* – The smoker’s deck is definitely the place to socialize. I love it! My suitemates and I are getting along just fine.
*DL* – I don’t go there as much, but I see and hear a lot of people down there. There are so many different types of people. It can get pretty crazy.

On the activities

*DL* – I don’t really get into the stuff they have around Sandburg, but I think the Flicks thing is pretty cool if I’m ever in a movie mood.
*CK* – I was definitely into the Virtual House Party. The free t-shirt I got is one of my favorites to wear.

The two reminisced about classes, sleeping when they had a spare moment, parties and staying in as the interview wrapped up. Both say that overall the experience has been an alright one, but still have no idea where the semester will lead.

*MS* – Soak up the time living there while you can. It goes quicker than you think. Trust me.
