Individuals who have been an RA or CA have used terms such as “responsibility,” “enjoyment” and “involvement” when describing their experiences.
Being a Resident Assistant or Community Assistant is a great way to live and work on campus, and to do so while making an impact and having a positive influence on other students.
Individuals who have been an RA or CA have used terms such as “responsibility,” “enjoyment” and “involvement” when describing their experiences. But the big question many individuals have about becoming an RA or CA is, “What would I do?”
A Community Assistant(CA) works in University Housings’ Kenilworth Square Apartments. This individual acts as a go-to person for emergencies and other situations. “This includes being a resource for residents in matters relating to the facility, community and personal concerns,” states the Community Assistant position description.
As a Resident Assistant (RA), a person is put in charge of a house consisting of two floors of residing students. These students are able to not only go to their RA for assistance, but look to their RA for information about events, planned activities, and campus news. Activities commonly seen around the UW-Milwaukee residence halls include signs for pizza nights, TV show screenings, socials or organized events for University Housing residents. Additionally, the RA and CA positions are further outlined in job descriptions, which can be found at the University Housing webpage.
A Resident Assistant’s responsibilities are outlined as the following by the position description, “Resident Assistants assume responsibilities for providing student assistance; peer counseling; developing and implementing…programs for residents; enforcing policies of University Housing and assuming the role of securing the residence halls when on duty.”
A similar description is given for the Community Assistant position at Kenilworth Square Apartments. Both positions also have similar expectations.
A solid academic standing, adherence to rules and availability to fulfill the hours needed are some of the things University Housing will look for in reviewing applicants. Each RA and CA is allotted five vacation days a month upon approval. On all non-vacation days all RAs and CAs are expected to be in the building where they work by 2 a.m. This does not mean there will be bed checks, as it is assumed each RA and CA will take their responsibilities seriously and conduct themselves accordingly.
If you have more questions take a look at the frequently asked questions page on the University Housing Web site or contact Staffing and Training Graduate Assistant Rose Wasielewski, at 414-229-2501 or rose@aux.uwm.edu . To become an RA or CA for UWM, fill out an online application and turn it in at Sandburg Hall Room C120 by noon Oct. 16.
