Union Station moves to Terrace Cafe
The Union Station in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union has moved and is now featured inside the Terrace Cafe, said a restaurant operations employee.
The Terrace Cafe remains operational and will still provide lunch options for students when the semester begins on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The big difference now is that the Union Station has moved in to that space and is occupying most of it.

1,500 students petition parking program
More than 1,500 students have sent electronic letters to Milwaukee aldermen since 5 p.m. Wednesday, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association officials said in a press release.
Orgs to celebrate sustainable energy choices
The University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin will be hosting an informational Green Fair Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be members from community environment groups, student organizations and schools within UWM. Among these are Ecotone, Student Sierra Coalition, the Environmental Council, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Milwaukee Environmental Consortion, Growing Power and others.
SAC won’t fund rep-less orgs
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Appropriations Committee will no longer approve any funding requests for organizations that do not send a representative to the meeting, it was announced at the committee meeting Tuesday.
Organizations that will have requests under review will be notified via e-mail and are expected to send a representative to articulate that request.
Student Association to hold UPass meetings
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association announced today that it will hold a town hall on the future of UWM’s participation in the Milwaukee County UPass program.
The town hall forum is scheduled for noon and 5 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Union, Room 191.
City ordinance could require new smoke alarms
Milwaukee residents could soon receive a fire-safety boost, according to Milwaukee Fire Chief William Wentlandt.
Pending approval by the Zoning, Neighborhoods & Development Committee of Milwaukee’s Common Council, homes would be required to use tamper-proof sealed-battery alarms. This new requirement would replace the current standard of nine-volt battery alarms found in most homes. Wentlandt says nine-volt alarms are unsafe because they are often left un-powered after batteries run out of power or are removed for various reasons.

The final sentencing for Michael R. Green, the man who pleaded guilty to unintentional homicide of Joe Munz, will be on Friday, May 18.

Downer Festival Sept. 7-8
The Urban Playground Foundation hosts their annual festival Sept. 7-8 on Downer Avenue, featuring a bicycle tour, auction and live entertainment.
The festival was previously held at Brady Street but moved to Downer Avenue to add a second family stage. Musical groups include: De La Buena, Fever Marlene, Northern Room, The Gufs and other family entertainment.

The Student Association (SA) is searching for a new chief justice for the student court since Mandi Schaefer stepped down from the position since moving.
SA president Rob Grover aims to announce his nominee at the Sept. 23 SA Senate meeting. The Senate will have to vote to confirm the nominee.
“I don’t want to rush into nominating someone just to make people happy,” Grover said.

University employees donate more to Democrats
University employees nationwide are contributing more to political campaigns than ever before, with the bulk of the contributions going to Democratic candidates, according to a report by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.
Employees of universities have currently given over $7 million to federal candidates, parties and committees in the 2008 cycle, according to the CRP, with 76 percent going to Democrats.

Power outages not related
The two power outages this semester, Sept. 19 and Oct. 25, were not related, said Brian Manthey of We Energies. On Sept.19, a piece of equipment called a “pothead,” where energy transitions from underground to overhead, blew out near the intersection of 20th and Cornell. That cut off electricity sent to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
On Oct.25, a disturbance occurred likely on a line near the Milwaukee River going to UWM. Manthey said wildlife could have caused the problem.

Black students more likely to have off-campus jobs, according to study
According to a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee study, black students are nearly three times more likely than white students to have off-campus jobs that interfere with their schoolwork. The study hopes to uncover issues that will help area schools boost minority enrollment. Several state campuses are working on “equity scorecards” to help evaluate college performances in recruiting and retaining minority students.

Chelsea Clinton to visit UWM Monday morning
Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former president Bill Clinton and democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, will be visiting campus Monday, February 11 at 10:45 a.m. for an informal question and answer session in Union Ballroom East. The session should last roughly 90 minutes and students can come anytime. Students are encouraged to ask questions about virtually anything.

Student barricades himself in dorm room
In the midst of flu season, a UWM freshman male barricaded himself in his dorm room for two days, stating that “he is too important to get sick”. He is so important that the Post didn’t even bother to get his name for the story, because he is a freshman and doesn’t matter. We hope he failed out.

Peck School of Arts pegs new Dean
UWM’s Peck School of the Arts selected former North Carolina School of the Arts Chancellor Wade Hobgood as its dean, according to a recent Journal Sentinel report. Hobgood is currently a professor of mass communications at the University of North Carolina in Asheville.

Residence Hall wins award
The UWM RiverView Residence Hall was recently named the best public/private partnership in the city by the Milwaukee Business Journal. It is the second consecutive year that UWM has claimed the award, with the Kenilworth Building receiving the award in 2007. The RiverView dorms opened for the spring semester.

The father of LSD passes away
The creator of LSD, Swiss Chemist Albert Hofmann, died Tues., April 28 from a heart attack at the age of 102. Hoffman received criticism for his medical discovery-turned-“problem child,” which has been charged with corrupting millions in the ‘60s. Hoffman defended the drug by saying it was intended as a medicine but was instead abused.
