UWM is presenting this year’s highly anticipated Summerdances: Spirits and Fugitives through the Dance Department of Peck School of the Arts happening May 28-30 at the Mainstage Theatre. These performances will not only be showcasing the performers but will honor the Milwaukee icon, the late great Dr. Martin Jack Rosenblum. Basing their dances around the music, poetry, research and creative genius that he contributed throughout his life, this is going to be an event you won’t want to miss.

Dr. Rosenblum was a talented musician, poet, creator and founder of the Rock and Roll Certificate Program, and senior lecturer of music mistory and literature to the Harley Davidson Historian (also known as The Holy Ranger). And this is just a brief description. Dr. Rosenblum had a tenacious spirit for life welcoming anyone to join him on his beautiful journey, one of the reasons he was and continues to be loved by so many.

The dancers that will be debuting their craft are Daniel Burkholder, Maria Gillespie, Elizabeth Johnson, Dani Kuepper, MFA alumnus Sam Johnson and MFA alumna Sarah Weber Gallo, who was the winner of the Sixth Annual New Work Award.

Also showcasing performing are two Milwaukee-based bands: The Grasping at Straws and Devil Met Contention. These bands have not only given respect to Dr. Rosenblum- as being someone that influenced them greatly- but they have a sophisticated narrative and sounds that demand respect. Objects of his memorabilia will be displayed for viewing as well.

Through the words and spirit of The Holy Ranger one could easily identify that he had the true Americana Spirit of the American Cowboy. So in respect to Dr. Rosenblum and the gifted performers let’s join them and bare our inner rebels.
