Student Identity Preservation (SIP) Coalition and Planned Parenthood Generation Action Club (PPGEN) at UWM are hosting “Save Our Centers!” block party on April 30 from 12-2 p.m. in Spaights Plaza with special guest Francesca Hong.
The SIP coalition at UWM is a group of students opposing the consolidation of the university’s cultural and identity spaces.
Hong is a Democratic candidate for Wisconsin governor and a current member of the Wisconsin State Assembly representing Wisconsin’s 76th Assembly district.
The event is in response to student backlash from the announcement that UWM will merge 8 separate student resource spaces into one combined student center.
“We are planning this in support of the Multicultural Centers and the Centers for advocacy and Student Engagement, and against the consolidation of them,” Brynna Fennie, Secretary of PPGEN at UWM.
At the event, there will be speakers and the circulation of QR codes linking to an online petition. There will also be community crafts and the passing out of snacks.
Some student organizations at UWM will be tabling at this event, which will have UWM Student Government member Sierra Lee as the MC.
“The centers themselves cannot table, and so we are relying on student power to help highlight the centers that have created a foundation of culture and identity celebration on the UW-Milwaukee campus,” Fennie said.
As an unofficial student organization, the event hosts requested a $13 donation to PPGEN to cover the tabling fee.
UWM Post will have a table at the event and be speaking with students to get their opinion on this developing story. Visit our table to share your thoughts with the UWM community.
