Currents took the stage at the Subterranean in Chicago on Feb. 29, 2020, and they’re a force to be reckoned with in the heavy music scene. Their recent performance proved that this is just the beginning for the band.
Currents are currently supporting fellow rockers Silent Planet as part of the “Trilogy” tour. As the third band of the night, the crowd was receptive and enthusiastic, moshing along to every breakdown.
Currents are one of the heavier bands in the tour lineup, and their songs hit even harder in person than recorded versions. The band didn’t sacrifice their quality of instrumentals when blending the chugging guitar riffs in the process. The vocals shone through and were well balanced between gritty and melodic. Standout tracks included “Poverty of Self,” “The Place I Feel Safest, “Second Skin” and “The Rope.”
Having the chance to see Currents three times prior to the show in Chicago, I had high expectations; they’ve gotten better and better with each performance, and they’ve found their niche in the metalcore scene. Their stage presence has improved, and they bring a high level of energy to every set.
Vocalist Brian Wille stated they are playing some “deeper cuts” on this tour. As a longtime fan, I appreciated hearing a few of their older songs. However, the dynamics were noticeably different between “Withered” and “Shattered” when compared to their recent releases. As they continue to grow as a band, I’d like to see refinement in their live presence with their older tracks.
They plan to release a new album later this year, and I’m already eager to catch another set from the New England natives. For anyone who’s a fan of heavier music, I urge you to check out their current discography. Keep an eye out for their upcoming releases and tour plans.
