The electronic and vintage disco-influenced instrumentalists Mystery Skulls are performing at the Back Room of Collectivo on Friday, October 4, 2019. Only a couple dates into their new “Back to Life Tour: Part 2,” tickets start at $15 for the neo-soul dance group. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Expect to see Phangs and Snowblood as openers, creating a nice electric soundscape.
Mystery Skulls is an outfit surrounding their lead singer/songwriter Luis Dubuc. Dubuc moved around a lot as a kid; from Venezuela to Toronto to Dallas, he eventually created the band in Los Angeles around 2013. After taking a break from music, they came back with their sophomore album “One of Us.”
The band recently released a promising music video for their new single “Far Away”. An intriguing choreographed fight scene on the subway in an eastern country is overlaid with electronic synthesizers and head pounding drums; this makes for an intense three-minute video.
Mystery Skulls is more than an outfit of transient synths and repeating drum patterns. The lead singer-songwriter spoke to LoveisPop about the most recent album as an imaginary movie or a story album.
“Yeah, well, I tried to make it go from imaginary to real, but it was to no avail. But, yeah, that was my concept. That it was the soundtrack to a film. A lot of the lines in the songs are the speaking parts of the characters in the film. Like the song “One of Us,” that’s this character speaking to all these people. It’s all conceptual and hypothetical, but, yeah, it’s a story album. I’d never made a story album. All my previous music was always autobiographical. So, this was trying my hand at doing something that felt a little bit different. I’m really proud of it overall,” said Dubuc.
Luis and his team are very sincere when it comes to their music and more importantly; the fans that support them. He tells a story about meeting a fan that shortly after became a partner on a newer music video. According to his LoveisPop interview, dedicated fans created a fan-made video. The video compiled a Mystery Skulls song with the “Dumb Running Sonic” meme and soon went viral. The creator, Ben, has since become friends with Dubuc; creating videos for “Money” and “Ghost.” Both videos received millions of views and inspired other fans to create similar art. It’s inspiring to see him reach out to fans for opportunities that he could give to others in the music industry. Mystery Skulls headlines with openers Phangs and Snowblood. Both Phangs and Snowblood are coming hot off of releases this year, and they collaborated heavily with Mystery Skulls; it sure will be an electric night.
