Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for a lot of things: family, friends, health, safety, wealth, education, food, and even music. The Fringe compiled a list of songs we’re grateful for this giving season and we hope you like them too.
- “Sweet Child O’ Mine” – Guns n’ Roses
Dayton Hamann
After hearing the beautiful guitar intro of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns n’ Roses for the first time many years ago, I fell in love—not just with the song but with an entire genre. This tune got me into rock music, and for that, I am forever thankful.
- “Whoomp! (There It Is)” – Tag Team
Jack Fennimore
For our family, there’s no better way to reconnect during Thanksgiving than cruising down the road with this bouncy and fun Hip-Hop staple booming on the stereo. The song is responsible for my love of old-school Hip Hop, R&B and Soul, something that my entire family can enjoy together. Can you dig it
- “Good Day” – Nappy Roots
Analise Pruni
This year, I am so very thankful for Nappy Roots’ song “Good Day.” Every time I hear it I’m reminded to save my troubles for another day. Roll the windows down and turn this one up on the way to see your families this Thanksgiving.
- “Best of You” – The Foo Fighters
Katie Swick
“Best of You” is one of the first real music videos I remember watching in fascination on Fuse TV when I was 10 years old. They became my first concert and a door to great music.
- “Just Like Heaven” – The Cure
Xi’an Williams
I was introduced to this band when I was younger and this was the first song I heard. The synth and calm melody of the guitar makes me instantly content every time I hear this song, regardless of listening to it hundreds and hundreds of times over the course of 10+ years.
- “Everyday” – Dave Matthews Band
Mary Jo Contino
Everything from the soulful stylings of the band to Matthew’s uplifting lyrics, this song both makes you thankful for the song and thankful for being alive. The first stanza says it all: “Pick me up, oh, from the bottom / Up to the top, love, everyday / Pay no mind to taunts or advances / I take my chances on everyday”.
- “Archie, Marry Me” – Alvvays
Sarah Thomas
The song and band I’m thankful to have found is “Archie, Marry Me” by Alvvays. The Canadian rock band formed in 2011. When lead singer, Molly Rankin sings, “Hey, hey, marry me, Archie” for the chorus, you melt into warm, gravy like puddle.
- “Smooth” – Santana ft. Rob Thomas
Sydney Zahradka
Oftentimes the thing that can separate the good songs from the great is a killer guitar riff. For this reason, I can think of no artist better than Santana to recommend to those looking for a sultry Spanish rock song to combat the cold weather ahead. “Smooth,” featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, will have you playing air guitar for days afterward.
