The UWM Post spoke with 10 different student organizations set up at the Winter Involvement Fair about their goals for the spring semester.
Prowl Radio
Prowl Radio is UWM’s student-run radio station founded in 2022.
Students have the opportunity to write, edit content, contribute to social media posts, have their own podcast, interview artists, DJ their own show and join a community of UWM students passionate about radio.
“We’re kind of the whole Shebang,” Station Manager Grace Pagel said. “So if any student has an idea, they’re more than welcome to come to us and we can help support.”
The station has returned with their spring shows, which can be listened to live here.
Production Club
UWM’s Production Club is a collection of artists who help each other with their individual work, and who work throughout the school year to collaborate and craft a short film.
During the fall semester, they discussed scripts created by members and settled on a film to produce during this spring semester.
“Now we are going over key positions,” Secretary Connor Robinson said, “We hopefully will be shooting in March.”
The Production Club is open to all majors and meets on Mondays at 7:30 pm in Mitchell Hall B65.
According to Robinson, the club is for “any student that wants to learn about film” or “already loves film.”
Society of Women Engineers
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at UWM is a chapter of a larger global organization that aims to increase diversity in engineering.
“You don’t have to be a woman or an engineer to join,” SWE Vice President Greta Boehm said.
SWE has professional development opportunities, social events and networking with fellow engineers.
“Engineers specifically have really hard classes, so finding someone to help with your homework can never hurt,” Boehm said.
This semester the organization is looking to rebuild its core group of officers.
Music Appreciation Club
The Music Appreciation Club is an organization that shares music regardless of a student’s musical knowledge or taste.
Members share songs and create playlists centering around a theme such as songs from childhood or songs to cry to.
The club puts together music-themed events like karaoke, music debates and trivia.
According to the outgoing secretary, Hazel Williams, the club is looking for new members and retention of current members to ensure the continuation of the organization.
“We’re very open to change,” Williams said. “We will implement new ideas and try new things, because we want to be the best possible music-sharing environment for everyone.”
African Student Association
The UWM African Student Association (ASA) is a culturally diverse organization that aims to bring together students of African descent and create a community on campus.
ASA brings together UWM students from different backgrounds to celebrate the diversity of cultures.
“We really accept everyone of different backgrounds because everyone has a story,” ASA President Pamela Nwakaku said.
This organization is being reactivated after a few years and is looking to get more people to join.
Nwakaku said their goal for the semester is to, “…create more events on campus for people to celebrate each other and have fun.”
Dead Poets Society
The Dead Poets at UWM is a bi-weekly poetry open mic, where creatives go to share their art in a safe space. They meet on Thursdays at 8 p.m.
The club is open to “anyone interested in creative writing or the Arts in general,” Jack Uslabar, a member of the Dead Poets, said. “You don’t even need to share anything.”
This semester, they plan to publish another chat book to get their member’s artwork out into the world.
Dead Poets at UWM want to “get as many people feeling comfortable and confident to go up and share the stuff that is personal to them, or they take pride in with no fear of rejection,” said Uslabar.
Latinx Student Union
The Latinx Student Union (LSU) at UWM is a student-based organization that creates a community of Latinx students as well as welcoming anyone from other backgrounds.
“Our goal is to get new people to join us and see what we’re about,” LSU Treasurer Gissel Guadalupe Sandoval, said.
Panther Catholic
Panther Catholic is the Catholic organization on campus that provides students with community.
“Whether you are Catholic or not, it’s an opportunity to learn more about God and have a current relationship with him and each other,” Anna Crespo, an active member, said.
The organization has community service opportunities, social events and a free dinner every Tuesday after Mass.
Minority Media Association
The Minority Media Association (MMA) at UWM aims to give voice to minority stories and create opportunities for its members in the media.
MMA’s goal this semester is to continue the UWM’s DNA podcast which previously launched in the fall.
Members of MMA plan to go to an investigative journalism conference this spring.
Dungeons and Dragons Network
The Dungeons and Dragons Network at UWM is a social group on campus that comes together to play D&D campaigns. It is free to play, and the club is beginner-friendly.
According to Club President Sadie Rockette, the organization is a good fit for any student interested in fantasy, role-playing or theater.
“My goal for the organization is for us to grow membership, to have fun and to build a community,” said Rockette.
