Trevor Noah remains measured and calm while understanding the view of TheBlaze Tomi Lahren’s reactions to Black Lives Matter, Colin Kaepernick, and Trump’s election win.
In a 26-minute interview that remained a restrained back and forth interview been Noah and Lahren, the awkward conversation was all the more fascinating due to the extreme differences in views between them.
Lahren, who became popular due to her aggressive stance on political topics back in 2015, remained collected but stood by what she said in her segments. Noah, on the other-hand, while throwing in quips and jokes about his nationality and the KKK, silently stood out far more than any of his other segments. Noah’s interest in seeing her side shines through the interview, making it one of the best pieces of journalism the Daily Show has offered its audiences.
Noah started the segment asking why Lahren seemed so angry and what was her response to the Trump scandal, as she was a Trump supporter herself. Referring to the leaked audio of Trump saying he could do anything he wanted with his star-status, even grabbing women by their genitals, Lahren explained how she found it inappropriate.
“It was not a good day for Trump supporters,” but that she still compares his words to Clinton’s “nasty” actions.
Noah followed up her response to how his words could impact women and how they are treated in response. Lahren called out how “liberals” fail to recognize successful women because they are conservative.
Lahren said that her purpose is to bring light to the “fly-over states” that are ignored by mainstream media. Hailing from South Dakota, Lahren said she trying to give a voice to those who are being “labeled into silence.” Lahren said that Trump being an outsider and shaking up the Republican Party was needed.
Obamacare was a hot topic for both Noah and Lahren, in which Noah brought up how Trump has been going back on the total repeal of Obamacare. In defense of the flip, Lahren said that the repeal could leave some people out in the cold and make the republican party look like the bad guys. Lahren said that the repeal of the government mandate would be the perfect place to start in order to start to fix the failing healthcare system.
Life was breathed back into the audience as they laughed at Lahren’s comments where she called Trump “level-headed” and “reasonable,” which left Noah to ask if she had Twitter.
“I am a conservative,” Lahren said, “but I am a millennial, so I don’t really like labels,” she said as a quip to a group of young adults.
Black Lives Matter was addressed by Noah, saying that “For somebody who is not racist, you have to spend a lot of time saying saying ‘I’m not racist’”. Lahren said she respected Black Lives Matter until the group became a riot, and using “hands up don’t shoot” narrative, which she said is a false narrative. Noah and Lahren argued back and forth that the shooter and Texas, who shot and killed five police officers, was a Black Lives Matter activist.
“Point blank, the shooter said he was doing this because of Black Lives Matter,” Lahren said about the man who shot and killed five police officers.
“Just because say the thing doesn’t mean it is what is stands for,” Noah said in response and compared the incident to a segment on Lahren’s show were she said that just because members of the KKK support Trump, it doesn’t make him a KKK leader.
Social media and mainstream media was discussed as Noah asked Lahren if she considered herself part of the mainstream, which she said she believes she is not, in comparison to the millions of views her segments received.
“I wish we could disagree with each other without thinking we are bad people, or ill-intentioned,” Lahren said, and that just because she criticizes black people or the BLM movement she doesn’t believe she is mean or racist because she doesn’t see color.
“There is nothing wrong with seeing color, it’s how you treat color that’s more important,” Noah said in response to her, and that saying that her statements about BLM movement being the new KKK are not right because the KKK has not disappeared and that it’s still active.
Noah brought up Lahren’s segment about how refugees should be grateful to be in the U.S. Lahren said that she believes it’s a privilege to live in the U.S. and that if they respect the U.S. and its people that then they are allowed to protest in comparison to illegal immigrants who “cut in line” during the immigration process.
Lahren also said if Trump doesn’t keep his word about his points that he lead with during his campaign that she’d be the first to call him out. Lahren, saying that she isn’t the bandwagon sort, felt that the choice between Trump and Clinton left her with only Trump as a viable option for the presidency, a view she believes she shares with many American voters.
The conversation was riveting and a great segment of discussion on behalf of Noah and Lahren. The tense conversations didn’t become a shouting match, and the tough topics with many different views for many different people were not ignored. Noah displayed both patience and respect toward Lahren’s thoughts as much as she remained poised and showed a willingness to witness.
