The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2027-28 academic year is now available. Students who complete it as soon as possible will maximize their eligibility for grants, scholarships and other financial aid resources.
Here’s a checklist from UWM to get students started:
- Gather Documents: Social Security number, federal income tax returns, W-2s and other relevant financial information.
- Visit the FAFSA website: Complete the application. It’s user-friendly and will guide students through the process step by step.
- Use UWM’s school code: When prompted, enter the school code 003896 to ensure it is sent directly to UWM.
- Don’t miss out on the opportunities available. Completing the FAFSA is an important step to unlock grants, loans and scholarships. Then, focus on being a student.
Here are some of the benefits:
- Access to grants: By submitting the FAFSA, a student may qualify for grants that do not need to be repaid.
- Low-interest loans: If grants alone don’t cover expenses, the FAFSA also determines eligibility for federal student loans, which typically offer lower interest rates than private loans and don’t require a co-signer.
- Scholarship consideration: UWM awards more than $26 million a year in student scholarships. Many scholarships inside and outside of the institution use FAFSA as part of their application and consideration process.
