Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer responsible for the death of George Floyd in 2020, was found guilty of all three charges against him after a three week-long trial.
Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder, for which he faces up to 40 years in prison; third-degree murder, for which he faces up to 25 years; and second-degree manslaughter, for which he faces up to 10 years.
The 12-person jury deliberated for just over 10 hours to reach the verdict after several weeks in the court room and testimony from 45 different witnesses.
Social media sites, like Twitter, have erupted with support for the decision. The phrase “rot in hell” trended on twitter within hours of the announcement.
President Biden took to Twitter to call the verdict “a step forward.”
