Mod Sun is a national recording artist and Minnesota native known for his accomplishments in his career spanning over half of his life. He has released a tremendous amount of music that has developed his career as an independent artist as well as his relations in the industry. Mod has released more than 100 songs—amassing to the release of 6 mixtapes, 3 albums, and 3 EPs.  He has collaborated with a number of well-renowned artists such as Blackbear, Gnash, G-Eazy and Machine Gun Kelly, amongst many others.  Mod hopes to achieve a more intimate and enthralling stage performance on his new “Your Favorite Movie Tour,” featuring hit singles “I Remember Way Too Much” and “Kinda Like It Now” from his impending 2020 album. Milwaukee is one of the first stops on his tour that will run through the beginning of April and features support from Pablo Dylan (Bob Dylan’s grandson) Aye B, Jimmy Bennett, Winter Havens and LostinVegas.

In light of his new tour hitting the streets of Milwaukee, I interviewed Mod Sun on February 28 about his music, inspirations, new tour, and what will possibly be the most transformative year of his life.

Mod Sun is excited to go back to his hometown, but in addition, he is eager to be back in the Midwest, where many of his early-on supporters reside.  This is his first tour without drugs or alcohol. Mod Sun is enthusiastic about coming up on one year of sobriety and making The “Your Favorite Movie Tour” one for the ages, as Mod explains, “this tour I’m really performing the set of my dreams…..I’m spreading my wings really wide on this tour, like I’m playing a lot of piano.” There will no doubt be a number of vulnerable moments in this set and along the tour that the audience will get to experience with him.

He is tremendously focused on making his performance the best-to-date and performing the best he’s ever performed. He really wants this experience to have a “‘live’ feeling performance and a full band vibe” in order to put all his effort into “being the best artist that steps on the stage this year.”

Following, I asked him about the values he instills in his music, to which he replied, “I try to keep a strong message in my music, really no matter the song—there’s an underlying message of positivity, of overcoming things and creating your future.” Inspiration is also a value he tries to hold firmly in his music. He values making music that inspires others.

However, for him personally, his inspirations come from a plethora of sources. From “many heroes” and “so many idols in music” to “certain things that happen in [his] life at the moment and trying to find the beauty in anything that’s going on.” He wanted to pursue a music career at a young age and was really inspired by the “Blink-182 era” that pushed him into making music.

For anyone who is unfamiliar with his music, he wants them to know, “I’ve been making music and touring for essentially half my life and I was in rock bands before this.” He started out as a drummer for two punk bands, Four Letter Lie and Scary Kids Scaring Kids. Nonetheless, he later decided to pursue a solo career. He further explained the band got signed “and went on tour and not long after he went in reverse and quit the band.” He went back to not having a record label and existed independently within the music business. He puts all of his money and effort into his own success, saying, “If I fail, it is my fault,” in order to produce and make music that is one-hundred percent, authentically himself.

For his supporters, a message that he would want you to know about him through his music is that he is striving to create a message that is relatable, yet also provokes happiness and elicits inspiration and happiness from and to his audience.

Mod Sun’s new performance era will be a definitive point in this new year and his career overall. The “Your Favorite Movie Tour” is anticipated to be an exceptional experience for Mod Sun supporters and those who have yet to experience his music.

Don’t miss out on Mod Sun—he will be performing in Milwaukee at the MiraMar Theatre on March 8; tickets are available online now.
