Dancers it’s time to come together and dance for the 2nd Annual Dance Marathon on Nov.12, 2016, from 1:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m., in order to reach the goal of $15,000. All money from this event will go directly to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
Last year marked the first year a Dance Marathon took place at UW-Milwaukee. College students all over the country organize and run this event at their own schools. The proceeds go to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Their mission statement is, “We dance for those who can’t.” Aside from the monetary goals dance teams must dance for ten hours straight.
Students interested in the event can sign up at the Panther Miracle Network Dance Marathon registration page. By registering dancers create a personal fundraising page which makes it easier to donate for those interested in sponsoring a dancer. November 1, is the final day to register but people can donate till November 29.
The Dance Marathon organization began in 1991 when a group of students got together and organized “IUDM” (Indiana University Dance Marathon) and raised $10,900. The organizers had been friends with Ryan White, a young man who had passed away from HIV/AIDs as a result of a bad blood transfusion. They danced to honor his memory and to raise awareness for children with terminal illnesses.
Several years later after the first dance marathon Children Miracle Network approached IDUM to work together and bring this event to other universities. As of 2013 over 250 universities are involved with Dance Marathon.
Those interested in the event can learn more on UW-Milwaukee’s Student Involvement Page, search Dance Marathon, or on social media with the username DMatUWM or the hashtag #FTK, for the kids.
