The UWM Baseball team has had another series cancelled. The Panthers were scheduled to play Valparaiso in Indiana this weekend, but snow and bad field conditions forced cancellation of their Horizon League opener.
Even though it is a conference game, it will not be made up, but they will face off again when Valparaiso comes to play at Henry Aaron Field on April 17th, at least hopefully.
Late winter conditions put a serious hamper on college baseball, especially in the north. The Panthers are scheduled for their home opener in two weeks, and there is no guarantee the Hank will be ready to play.
In more positive news, sophomore catcher Mitch Ghelfi was named to the watch list for the 2014 Johnny Bench award, which is given annually to the top NCAA Division I collegiate catcher.
Ghelfi has appeared in 10 of their 11 games this season, is currently batting .200, and is one of the teams better up and coming young players.
