
This past week UWM’s hockey team faced off against Marquette University in a two-game series. Both games were played at UWM’s home rink at The Ponds of Brookfield Ice Arena. The first game ended 9-3 in favor of Marquette. The second game ended with a score of 4-0 once again in favor of the golden eagles .
Game one
The panthers played hard in their first game against Marquette in their first game on September 24th. Milwaukee’s starting lineup consisted of:Auggie Jones, Jack Bianchi, Avery Black, Rowan Amundson, Kian Pinheiro and Sawyer Guenther.
The Golden Eagles quickly took the lead two minutes into the first period when Marquette’s Pierce Mayer, assisted by #2 and #22, scored the first goal of the game. UWM’s Al Vizgaitis put the first points on the board with six minutes remaining in the first period.
Marquette’s Nico Venier quickly answered with another goal assisted by #2. With 1:35 left in the first, Marquette’s Frank Shediac, scored another goal for the Golden Eagles. The period ended with a score of 3-1 with 13 shots on the goal by Marquette and nine by Milwaukee.

The Second period was mostly fighting back and forth between the teams until the eighth minute mark of the period when a goal was made by Marquette’s Bryan Power with an assist from #19. This was followed quickly by a penalty for both Marquette University and the Panthers.
Milwaukee incurred another penalty three minutes later. With four minutes remaining in the period, Marquette’s #20 scored another goal. A minute later, Colin Lockwood scored the first goal for the panthers in the second period.
Marquette’s Stanley Payne and #20 regained their 3-point lead scoring another goal with one minute remaining in the period. The second period ended with Marquette leading 6-3 having scored 23 shots on the goal while UWM scored 20.
The third period exhibited more of the back-and-forth action which we have seen throughout this game until a Marquette’s Daniel Sendobry, made a goal assisted by #9 and #28. Marquette scored again two minutes later.
Shortly after, we saw three penalties issued, one for UWM and two for Marquette. Reis Nisus sustained an injury which took him out for the remainder of the game resulting in a penalty being issued to Marquette’s Bryan Power. Marquette ended the third period with a goal by John Source assisted by #2.
The first game in a two game series against Marquette ended. A final score of 9-3 and a total of 32 shots on goal for Marquette and 25 for the Panthers.
Game two
The second game was played on September 25th and showed better defensive plays by both teams. The starting lineup for the Panthers consisted of: Same Siepert, Dominick Mader, Cam Lukbe, Al Vizgaitis, Andrew Catalano and Jack Bianchi.
The first period started out slowly until a UWM penalty with only two minutes left. This was followed a minute later by a Marquette penalty.Sam Siepert, made an impressive first home appearance keeping the first period a 0-0 shutout, despite Marquette Universities’ 13 shots on goal in comparison to UWMs four.

The second period proved to be more eventful with the first goal of the game being scored after five minutes by Marquette. Another two being scored about a minute later. After the Golden Eagles’ three goal run, the Panthers received a penalty shortly before Marquette was able to score another goal.
The game was quiet for some time until Marquette received a penalty with six minutes remaining in the period, this was quickly followed by another goal. Four minutes later, UWM received another penalty. In the final seconds of the period, a fight broke out resulting in two penalties for Marquette and one UWM penalty. The period ended with Marquette leading 4-0 having scored 32 shots on goal to Milwaukee’s 23.
The third period started slowly in comparison to the second, with the first notable call being a penalty for Marquette after seven minutes quickly followed by a penalty for UWM. After that, Marquette scored two goals in rapid succession.
A moment later UWM revived another penalty followed by another shortly after. Marquette scored another goal to secure their 7-0 victory over Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles scored 43 shots on goal in comparison to UWM’s 24.
Milwaukee vs Marquette series this week ended in a disappointing outcome for Panther fans. Ultimately, this showed that the Panthers have much to look forward to as the team continues to play in coming weeks.
Overall UWM showed strong defense, having stopped a total of 66 shots on goal between the two games. The next panthers home game will be held at The Ponds of Brookfield Ice Arena on Saturday Oct. 10th where the Panthers will face the green knights of St. Norbert College.
