MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Police Department has updated its uniform policy to prohibit officers from wearing facial coverings that conceal their identity, aligning with a broader effort by city leaders to increase transparency in policing.
The change modifies the department’s standard operating procedures, explicitly banning masks used to obscure an officer’s identity while on duty. Milwaukee officers must remain identifiable while performing their duties, reinforcing expectations around visible badges and uniforms.
The policy shift comes as part of the Milwaukee Common Council’s “ICE Out” framework, a public safety initiative aimed at strengthening accountability and distinguishing local law enforcement from federal immigration authorities.
Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, who introduced the measure, said the policy reflects constituent demands for greater openness and trust between police and residents.“We met with the Police Chief, delivered the message of what our constituents were demanding, and he acted,” she said. “This is about responsiveness, accountability, and trust.”
The policy does not apply to federal agencies and is limited to the Milwaukee Police Department. However, city leaders have indicated plans to expand the requirement through legislation that would apply more broadly to law enforcement operating in the city.
