MILWAUKEE — Poetry is a common way for one to express their thoughts/experiences through artistic writing. Now, a sorority at UWM is giving students a chance to bring that self-expression to a larger audience.

The Tau Chapter of Zeta Sigma Chi sorority is hosting “Open Mic Night”, a poetry event in the Union Ballroom from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30. This event will feature poems and other artistic writing (raps, songs, or comedy) from UWM students and a guest speaker/performer.

The guest host/performer is David A. Romero, a Mexican-American spoken word artist from Diamond Bar, Calif. Romero is the second poet to be featured on ALL DEF DIGITAL, a YouTube channel run by music mogul Russell Simmons. Romero has performed and led workshops at over 50 colleges and universities in over 15 different states in the USA. More information on him is on his website (www.davidaromero.com).

Students do not need any prior experience with poetry or other creative writing to sign up for the open mic. The gift cards are for Panera Bread, the Panther Shop and the Grind, and they can be anywhere up to $50. Everyone who signs up receives a free raffle ticket. Additional raffle tickets cost $1.

To sign up for “Open Mic Night”, or purchase an extra raffle ticket, contact a Zeta Sigma Chi member (best contact would be Keaunis Grant; e-mail address is grantk@uwm.edu) or e-mail uwmzsc@gmail.com.
