February 2021, “Long Distance Love Songs”
This month’s playlist is inspired by Valentine’s Day and pandemic-induced long-distanced loving. From songs about distance causing heart break to songs about sparks that stay alive over thousands of miles, this playlist has it all. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify.
California King Bed by Rihanna – Cherita Booker
I chose this song because being distant isn’t just about physical space. Emotional distance can also feel like a long distance love. “In this California king bed, we’re 10,000 miles apart.”
Hey There Delilah by Plain White T’s – Emily Prochaska
Being apart from a loved one is difficult and it definitely strains a relationship (take it from a victim of a COVID breakup lol). This song gives us just a glimpse of what this year was for many long distance or quarantined couples, saying “a thousand miles seems pretty far, but we’ve got planes and trains and cars.”
London Boy by Taylor Swift – Brianna Schubert
This song isn’t exactly about long distance, but Taylor Swift is talking about her partner Joe Alwyn, who is from England. We do not know much about their relationship, but I’m sure it is long distance sometimes, so I’d say it counts. Plus, this is a great song, and I’ll take any excuse to add a Taylor Swift song to our monthly playlists.
The Ballad of Love and Hate by Avett Brothers – Haley Krueger
I chose this song because it shows the kind of strain that distance can do to a relationship, but people still overcome it. How even though sometimes people act indifferent, it doesn’t mean they’ve stopped caring. Also how even those who are openly devoted can sometimes do selfish things unintentionally.
Gasoline by HAIM & Taylor Swift – Jacob Rohan
This song is about two people who just cannot take their hands off each other despite their toxic relationship (fire loving gasoline even though it’s dangerous, get it…. lol). And although not every long distance relationship is toxic, long distance lovers are no strangers to desperately horny reunion.
