Mystery Skulls stopped by the Back Room @ Colectivo on Oct. 4 and he did not disappoint concert-goers that attended. Snowblood and Phangs set the mood off right with electrifying opening acts and as the lights dim and everyone’s voice lowered in anticipation of what happened next; Mystery Skulls came out with a huge display of audio equipment on a bench right in front of him; not waiting for any green light.

He started the almost 45-minute performance with a few tracks off his most recent album “Back To Life.”  As the crowd jumped back and forth with their arms pumping in the air, you could feel the bass through the floor every time your feet hit the ground. His vocal synth pedals went off and on as he twisted and turned the EQ and filter knobs from his mixers, occasionally knocking off his microphone transmitters as the whole stage shook from either the music… or him jumping around too much.

As he smoothly transitioned from track to track without breaking any emersion, you felt the rising synth chords coursing through you and couldn’t help but nod your head or jump around a bit. And as you did, others started to join you as well. Soon enough the whole room was shuffling around like a dance club.

For most of the performance he was behind his bench, and it didn’t feel like he was with us as a crowd. There was us, the bench, and then him, the barrier between us broke part of the enjoyment I got from the other acts.

Mystery Skulls battled a lot of problems on stage during his performance surprisingly. From breaking a mic receiver on the bench to holding out transitions for too long. Thankfully with his expertise and years of experience with live performances, he held out and still created a great performance.

Snowblood is an amazing personality to have on stage and is incredible to see perform. She hopped around the stage, singing her heart out. Her fans pressed against the front of the stage, recording or even calling their friends who couldn’t make it but didn’t want to miss her live performance.

The same situation happened with Phangs as well. While battling the random hecklers and slightly drunken fans, he managed to pour his heart out into each of his songs and had a great assortment of live instrumentation incorporated into his act, unlike many modern performers who just sing/rap over the original track. In between songs he spoke for a little bit, telling us he recently got married and had a child, as the crowd congratulated you saw that this was a musician that lived his best life and reflected it through his music. Whether it be his hardships or his successes, he presented it in all of his tracks.

While the whole concert was amazing I would really have to give it to Phangs for creating such an amazing atmosphere and handling the hecklers with such ease and even finishing his act with an apology for being rude to the rude people.

Mystery Skulls are only a quarter way through the tour dates and with Phangs and Snowblood opening for the majority of their dates. I am sure they will have a successful tour from here on out.
