National Food Day was Oct. 24, but staffers at the Post were too busy eating to publish a story celebrating such a great day. While this day is typically reserved for being aware of what kinds of foods we eat, some of us just like to eat things we like to eat, maybe because they make us feel good. Either way, we hope you feel good when you eat.

Only about last year did I learn of my utter love and adoration of pad thai. I can’t believe I had never known the joy of this miraculous creation. I’d dream of takeout nights and wish for someone to take me to Lucky Ginger to get my favorite variation of the dish. Then, a few weeks ago, I learned how to make it myself, and now I know of the care, time, ingredients and love that go into the making of this delicious dish.

Nothing is paired together with a Friday night in Wisconsin than a classic Friday Night Fish Fry. My whole life, I would always want a fish fry on Friday’s but I recently found one that I think I’ll be ordering weekly until I get sick of it. Just a short drive away from campus is Sobelman’s, who make one of the best Fish Fries I have ever had. Not only is it amazing, but it is affordable (right around ten bucks) and you definitely get enough food to get your money’s worth. Four sticks of fish with lemon slices to coat the food, a handful of seasoned fries and of course, tartar sauce. When you walk through those Sobelman’s doors to grab your fish fry, I promise you, it will not be your last time. Your stomach will be begging you to go back.

I don’t know if I can describe just how much soup positively affects my life. From broccoli cheddar to chicken tortilla, a bowl of warm broth on a cold day makes my soul infinitely happier. Whether it’s hot and sour, sweet corn, roasted red pepper or wild mushroom bisque, soup makes me feel like I’m being tightly hugged by those giant bears from Costco. Unlimited chicken and gnocchi soup at Olive Garden? Say less. And bread bowls? From a different planet all together. The crispy, fresh baked bread soaked in the steaming hot liquid gets so soft, flavorful and moist that it negates the fact that I used the word “moist.” I hate to end this on a sad note, but the Milwaukee location of an eatery dedicated to soup and bread bowls, aptly named Zoup, has closed down. If anyone is looking for me this month, I’ll be at the nearest Zoup location: Glenview, Illinois.

Being forced to pick a favorite food is like being forced to pick a favorite child, except ice cream has far fewer downsides than children and I have no children. I’m not talking about exclusively traditional ice cream either – I’m including pretty much anything ice cream related in this – aside from frozen yogurt after the age of 13. I could eat sorbet, custard, sundaes, sherbet, shakes, malts and gelato every day and love every minute of it. One of my life goals is to go on a world ice cream tour to taste all of the different kinds of delicious frozen treats from all of the different cultures of the world, and if I become lactose intolerant before that, my life is ruined.

I love that National Food Day falls in October, because that also means it is close to Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos. My comfort food around this season is tacos but only if they are coming off of a truck or being made by my mom.
