Noah Gundersen brought his band to The Back Room @ Colectivo on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019. He played to an adoring crowd of fans that knew even his newest songs by heart, a crowd that was more than receptive to technical delays.
These put only a minor damper on the excitement before the band came on stage, and it was immediately forgotten. Gundersen showcased a lot of his newest album, “Lover,” as well as some classics. He even showcased songs he’s played from previous bands he’s been in.
Near the end of the show, Noah brought on the openers to sing along with him and he later invited a country singer friend of his who, while unknown to me, seemed very familiar to the audience. I have not seen so many drunk, middle-aged, white people cheer that loud since I went to a Def Leppard concert in 2014.
Noah Gundersen has a refreshing musical style that blends many popular genres into something more unique. Gundersen takes inspiration from such genres as hip-hop, indie, rock and folk. I’m sure the notion is intriguing and in order to describe it, I’m tempted to relate it to country.
I only relate it to country music in that Gundersen’s voice brings with it an ambiguous west-coast accent, his guitar playing takes the main stage of many performances, and his songs carry a sense of longing and a sad narrative you’d expect from a down-on-his-luck cowboy singing around a campfire.
I, of course, mean no offense to Noah nor to fans of country music. His sound is so intimate it brings me into that night around the campfire and it feels almost as if it’s just him up on the stage. Behind all the flashing lights and electronic beats, Noah’s a lonely man on a stage singing about what’s hurt him.
Overall it was a nice show, not the kind of music I listen to often, but he certainly rocks his demographic. If my description seemed interesting to you, I recommend checking out Noah Gundersen’s music, even if just to satisfy your curiosity. You may just find yourself a “Lover” of the artist.
This is a really good writer you guys have working here. You should give them a HUGE raise
