UW-Milwaukee volleyball improved to 5-0 in Horizon League play after a two-match sweep against IU-Indianapolis over the weekend at the Klotsche Center.

The 2024 season is the Horizon League’s first to feature back-to-back matches each weekend as the basis for conference play.

“I actually kind of like it for this group because we are a very experienced team,” said head coach Susie Johnson. “It allows us to scheme and figure out what we need to tweak and do better for the next day, so it seems to be really working well for this group.”

Milwaukee won in straight sets through the weekend with 25-17, 25-14 and 25-18 victories on Friday and 25-17, 25-18 and 25-16 wins on Saturday.

“I think we blocked really well and we knew exactly what the other team was doing,” said outside hitter Madi Malone. “The other team has great hitters and I think we just both executed our blocking scheme and dug really well.”

Malone is one of six seniors on an upperclassmen-heavy team.

“Usually we have a great serving pass, and then we watch film and come out and warm up again,” said Malone. “It’s just to get ready and we know what the other team is doing. We study the other team then we get ready ourselves.”

Malone led the team with 15 kills during this weekend’s game. Alongside Malone, senior right side/middle Bri Geurts eight kills and a block.

Outside hitter Natalie Schmitz and right side Rachel Scott combined for 12 kills over the weekend as well.

“I think we are going to keep getting better, I think we’ve gotten better from the beginning of the year to here now,” said Malone on continuing their undefeated conference play. “I think we are going to keep improving, and keep getting better each game.”

The Panthers head south for a two-match weekend slate at Northern Kentucky on Oct. 11-12 before returning home to face Wright State, who received votes for NCAA’s top 25 earlier this year.
