Fall has arrived! With school back in session, pumpkin spice lattes back on the menu, pumpkin patch plans, early fall can seem like a wild ride. To make things a bit easier, we’ve provided a comprehensive fall forecast for Milwaukee.
What is a Fall Climate Outlook?
This is a seasonal forecast, aimed at predicting weather trends within the meteorological bounds of fall: September 1 through November 30. Just like our other forecasts, this will be broken into sections, but instead of days, the sections will be months. As history grants us a backdrop, models with climatological interpretation provide the colors, and we can paint a rough picture of what this upcoming fall might look like. This forecast compiles data from data, history tables, and climate outlooks into one summary for an easier to follow format.

September: Milwaukee average temperatures begin at a comfortable 70 degrees and cool to a mild 59 by the time October sneaks in, according to timeanddate.com. Average rainfall measures just short of 3 inches over the course of the month, keeping more sunny and dry than not. Climatologists at the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) agree upon an average September this year, with the odd possibility that averages can trend cooler or warmer. Precipitation forecasts remain equal chance, which is meteorological lingo for “can trend above or below”.

October: We greet pumpkin patches and Halloween decorations with a crisp average temperature of 59 degrees. Temperatures vary a bit, but stays cool as the jet stream attempts to move southward, dropping to an average of 47 degrees with the onset of November. Fall foliage reaches its peak in October, causing more than just temperatures to drop. While average timing of peak is mid-October, explorefall.com is hinting toward an end of month peak. Precipitation has historically tapered off to 2 inches, a lower total than September. First flurries are common in October, but accumulation usually holds off until November.

November: With autumn leaves falling to the ground in the final month of fall, temperatures follow. Average high temperatures reach 46 degrees in November, with lows falling into the 30s for Milwaukee. Measurable precipitation reaches 1.5 inches for the month, varying between rain and snow. While temperatures fall throughout the autumn months, The CPC has published a Seasonal Temperature Outlook indicating a warmer season for parts of Southeastern Wisconsin. We have equal chances of receiving our average precipitation of 1.5 inches, though given the forecasted warmer than average temperatures we can likely expect most precipitation to be rain, versus snow.
