In a game in which the Panthers dominated the shot tally 13-1, Magnus Flaatedal’s goal in the 54th minute sealed the deal for Milwaukee in a 1-0 victory over Green Bay Saturday night, earning them the Chancellor’s Cup.
The Panthers’ defense was locked in all night, as Green Bay’s single shot did not come until the 70th minute. Head Coach Kris Kelderman praised his team’s ability to come out and perform in a hostile environment.
Flaatedal continued to shine in his junior season, as the goal that put the Panthers ahead was his third of the year. It came off of a spectacular set up from Jamie Colin. From there, Flaatedal one-touched it before sliding it into the right side of the net.
“It was a obviously a great win for us tonight,” said Kelderman. “Green Bay is a tough place to play and we had some guys come through in some pressure situations.”
This was an emotional win for Kelderman. Prior to his stint at UW-Milwaukee, he was the coach at UW-Green Bay. He has been close to claiming the Chancellor’s Cup before. Each game from 2012-14 had been decided in double overtime (0-1-2 in that stretch). This win is Milwaukee’s first in the series since 2011.
“I thought we played very well the first half despite not scoring,” Kelderman said. “Holding them to one shot is very positive.”
This victory was crucial for the Panthers in the Horizon League conference standings. They are now 4-2-1 in league play with two contests left. Up next, the team travels to Wright State next Saturday for their final road game of the season. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CST.
