Both teams were unable to score a goal Saturday afternoon as the UW-Milwaukee Women’s soccer team tied the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies 0-0 at Engelmann Stadium on Saturday.
On a chilly, fall afternoon, the Panthers and Grizzlies both struggled to generate any legitimate scoring chances, as the two teams combined for a total of 19 shots. Although the shot total was high, each goalkeeper only had to make two saves through out the entire game.
The first half played out to be fairly even as UWM created two shots while Oakland only created one. Out of the three shots between both teams, none of them created much of a scare as neither goalkeeper had to make a save.
The game picked up a little in the second half as both teams came out attacking, creating opportunities they didn’t have in the first 45 minutes. The Panthers were awarded a free kick just outside of the box in the 63rd minute, but Krissy Dorre hit it directly into Oakland’s wall. Four minutes later, UWM earned another free kick but the opportunity ended the same way as the first as Maria Stephans once again hit into the wall.
Although UWM was unable to score and win the game, head coach Greg Henschel was pleased with his team’s effort as they recorded their first shutout of the season.
“I’m really happy we got a shutout,” Henschel said. “It took us far too long this year to get a shutout, but I’m proud of us to finally stay with it and get that shutout and I’m glad to see our team do that.”
UWM has really struggled offensively over the past three games as today marks the third straight game where they have failed to score a goal.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Panthers as their final two games of the regular season happen away from Engelmann Stadium against the top two teams in the Horizon League. Their next game takes place Wednesday at Valparaiso.
Milwaukee’s overall record is now 5-9-2 and 1-3-2 in the Horizon League.
The Panthers donned their pink jerseys for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It was also the final regular season home game for seniors Dorre, Kelly Lewers, Amy, Kauffung, Kelsey Holbert, Caity Bestwina, Vienna Behnke, Morgan LaPlant, and Emma Worthington,
