In one of the Bucks’ most important offseasons in their history, the franchise has endured one of the craziest weeks that can be remembered in recent memory.

Bucks star and two-time reigning Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo has been with the Bucks since he was drafted in 2013. He signed an extension in 2016 that tied him to the franchise until 2021.

All eyes are on Milwaukee now. On Friday at 5:00 p.m. CST, Antetokounmpo is eligible to sign a Supermax contract which would keep him in Milwaukee through the 2025-2026 season, a contract that fans and members of the league have been speculating if he would sign for years.

Antetokounmpo has gone on record during his time in Milwaukee plenty of times, saying that he enjoys Milwaukee and is loyal to the city. This past Summer, he told reporters that he can see himself staying with the Bucks as long as they continue to provide a winning culture.

Bucks General Manager Jon Horst threw it all out on the line this week to ensure that he could keep his star, making two moves that solidified Milwaukee as one of the best teams in the league. Late Monday night, Horst traded Eric Bledsoe, George Hill and three first-round draft picks to the New Orleans Pelicans for former all-star Jrue Holiday.

Within the same night, the Bucks were in the news again, sending Ersan ilyasova, Donte Divincenzo and DJ Wilson to Sacramento in exchange for sharpshooting guard Bogdan Bogdanovic.

For the night, Bucks fans were celebrating, eyes envisioning Antetokounmpo with a pen in his hand, ready to sign an extension.

That all quickly changed less than 24 hours later when Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that the Bogdanovic trade was “in jeopardy” due to Bogdanovic, a Restricted Free Agent, not agreeing to the deal.

Bogdanovic then decided to test the market, meaning that the trade was officially off the table. However, the Bucks were still eligible to acquire Bogdanovic through free agency.

By Thursday, the Bucks waived Ilyasova, making an acquisition of Bogdanovic via free agency that much more difficult.

The same night, reports announced that the NBA was going to investigate the Bucks and Kings for tampering, as it is against league policy to discuss deals involving free agents before free agency opens (Friday, Nov. 20)

Friday morning, NBA Insider at The Athletic Shams Charania reported that the Bucks are moving on from targeting Bogdanovic. The acquisition of the shooting guard is now nothing more than a fantasy for Bucks fans.

Just hours before one of the most vital periods in the franchise’s history, Bucks fans now are crossing their fingers that the Bucks have done enough to keep the generational talent in green and cream going forward.

Free agency officially opens at 5:00 p.m. CST on Friday.
