The deadline for online voter registration to vote in the upcoming Aug. 11 primary is Friday, July 22.

Voters can still register to vote in the primary by visiting one of their local libraries or the Milwaukee Election Commission downtown. Residents who have lived at their current address for at least 10 days can also register the same day as the primary at their voting place.

While there is still time to register to vote in the August primary, early registration helps ensure as many eligible voters are represented in future elections as possible.

The deadline to submit absentee ballots for the primary is Aug. 7, but considering the issues with absentee ballots in our April 7 election, submitting ballots as soon as possible cannot hurt.

Students at UWM and other Wisconsin universities can register to vote through WISPIRG, a group dedicated to increasing the number of registered and active student voters across Wisconsin. https://studentvote.org/

While Wisconsin people registering to vote to have a valid state issued ID or driver’s license, WISPIRG can help students who recently moved to the state find a legal way around this roadblock by following the instructions on their website.

The Aug. 11 Partisan Primary is a crucial step in deciding which candidates appear on the November election ballots, when dozens of state legislator seats will be up for grabs.

Young voter turnout has historically been low in virtually every past election. Even in Wisconsin where voter turnout is relatively high compared to other states, voters in their 20s statistically don’t show up on election day.

Groups like WISPIRG are trying to change that stat and make sure young voters are properly represented at the polls to bolster the democratic process and increase voter representation as a whole.
