The UWM Post Playlist of the Month is our way to let you all know what we’re listening to, what’s fresh, what’s fitting and what fills our ears with sonorous delight.

Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus – Adam Kelnhofer

Bela Lugosi was born this month nearly 140 years ago. Now he’s dead. While he wasn’t born in Transylvania, he was born in Romania and starred in horror movies through his prime. Who’s to say vampires don’t migrate across such feeble mental constraints as Romanian borders though? Perhaps Bela Lugosi is not dead, he’s just napping. I wish I could nap for half a century.

Season of the Witch by Donovan – Emily Prochaska

A little bit of rock to spice up your holiday season. It’s a great song to drive with your windows down, music up, and potentially go check out some interesting Halloween decorations. A great addition to your spooktacular playlist, right after the Monster Mash, so, if the broom fits, fly it and give it a listen.

I Put a Spell On You by PattyCake – Emily Prochaska

Although there are an abundance of renditions, this song is ageless. It can be found within the soundtrack of many of our favorite Halloween films and more specifically, the well-known spooky film, Hocus Pocus. The song starts out quite slow and builds up intensity overtime, breaking into an infectious chorus. Pay some extra homage to this classic this Halloween.

Can’t Fight The Moonlight by LeAnn Rimes – Emily Prochaska

Renowned from the soundtrack of Coyote Ugly, this song is a bop with some extra spice. It’s a great opportunity to sing as dramatically as you please, as the tone and lyrics bring their own breed of sass.

Gooey by Glass Animals – Brianna Schubert

This song feels like being lost in one of those mirror mazes at a carnival that your mom warned you to be careful because it’s super hard, but you brushed her off because what does she know? Everywhere you turn you’re just looking at yourself and hearing this groovy song. I guess that’s kind of like life. My mom told me that adulting is hard, and I only half believed her. Now I’m in life’s mirror maze and this song is the soundtrack.

Young & Beautiful by Lana Del Rey – Brianna Schubert

This song is chilling, from it’s slow melody to Lana’s flowing voice to the dark, low chords on the piano in the background. It also highlights the scary feeling of a new relationship, wanting to fall in love but fearing that it won’t last forever. She questions if he will love her when she’s no longer young and beautiful and is just left to be an “aching soul.” It’s a beautiful resolution when she concludes she knows he will.

Pretty by Ingrid Michaelson – Brianna Schubert

This song is off of Ingrid Michaelson’s album that was inspired by Stranger Things. No, really it was. Go take a look. Of all of the songs, this is my favorite because it has a circling feeling in the beat and melody, which reminds me of all of the supernatural and weirdness that Stranger Things has to offer. There’s also a powerful message about womanhood and being more than just a pretty face. She says, “I’m not just pretty, no I’m pretty damn good.”

People are Strange by The Doors Emily Prochaska

This is a classic to many alternative lovers. However, this song specifically always stuck out to me due to the somewhat slow tempo and eerie tone. It delineates the feeling of alienation in a peculiar manner and is perfect for people who want a catchy song to listen to with a pinch of creepiness to it.

Halloween by Phoebe Bridgers – Maggie Tews

It is called halloween so I can’t think about a song that fits the theme better. The song has a haunting feel about it and is slow and soft. Bridgers sings how she will turn herself into anything for another person (like even a lame couple’s halloween costume) and the lengths she will go for love – which is terrifying and relatable.

Time Warp by Little Neil, Patricia Quinn, Richard O’Brien – Adam Kelnhofer

Will anything be the same again after this year or did we get thrown into another inescapable time warp? Maybe if we all do the time warp again we’ll be able to get back to a time when we could all lose our virginity and throw toilet paper at the screen in the Oriental Theatre. What’s the harm in trying anyways?

Floats My Boat by Aer – Zach Semancik

I don’t know exactly what it is, but something about this song makes me roll my windows down, turn my radio to max, and scream the lyrics all while imagining that I’m driving a doorless and topless Jeep in Malibu. This song has a vibe that just makes you smile and puts you in a good mood. I also really love that in this song, aer has a “you do you” mentality, which is what I strive to live for every day.

Gauze by Gleemer – Maggie Tews

This song is very slowed, almost sounding distorted in some parts. I don’t want to put Gleemer in a labeled box but this song is very shoegaze and feels like the perfect song to go for a walk in the leaves wearing a beanie and jean jacket

Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins) by Father John Misty – Maggie Tews

I listened to this song a lot during the fall of 2018 and 2019 and 2020 so this song represents fall for me. It has fun lyrics that tell a story about two lovers and has a fast moving pace to Father John Misty’s lazy singing voice.
