The UWM graduation ceremony is officially postponed rather than canceled, according to a recent campus-wide email from Chancellor Mark Mone.

“What I didn’t spotlight enough then are the efforts underway to plan for alternative ceremonies,” Mone said.

UWM canceled the in-person graduation ceremony scheduled for May last week. The announcement spurred an online petition to postpone, rather than cancel, the ceremony. The petition quickly gained over 3,000 signatures in less than three days.

While no dates have been identified, the administration is looking into adding ceremonies in October or November. The administration is also considering expanding the already-planned graduation ceremony in December.

Mone also recommended that UWM schools and colleges plan “limited, interim, and virtual recognition” for students graduating in Spring 2020. Mone didn’t offer suggestions about what this recognition might look like.

The official dates will depend on the availability of the UWM Panther Arena, which is controlled by an outside entity.
