Alderman Alex Brower will host a town hall meeting for District Three residents on July 15 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Falcon Bowl, 801 E. Clarke St in Milwaukee, to discuss neighborhood safety issues.
“To ensure Brady Street, our district, and our city remain the vibrant, diverse place we all know and love, we must all be part of the conversation and be willing to roll up our sleeves and be part of the solution,” Alderman Brower said.
This meeting is coming after two incidents of violence that occurred last week on the Lower East Side. Just south of Brady Street on North Van Buren, there was a triple shooting that resulted in two people being injured and the death of 27-year-old Marquez Banyard.
Then, in the early morning of Friday, June 26, a 28-year-old person was critically injured in a shooting in the area of Farwell and Brady.
“I want to send my condolences to the family and friends of the person who lost their life earlier this week, and wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured in these shootings,” Alderman Brower said in a statement.
In his statement, Alderman Brower called for the State Legislature to reform gun laws, citing the need for universal background checks and waiting periods.
“We must condemn gun violence in the strongest possible manner. The unfortunate reality is that we have a proliferation of guns in our community, and people have become too quick to use them to resolve an argument or dispute,” Alderman Brower said. “This is backed by a system of State and Federal lawmakers who are unwilling and uninterested in restricting access to guns, and a court system that continues to remove restrictions on firearms under the guise of expanding Second Amendment rights.”
“Summer Safety Pilot Program”
Alderman Brower says that locally they are working on plans to curb violence. He mentioned that on June 25, the Brady Street Business Improvement District, in conjunction with Alderman Brower’s office, the Milwaukee Police Department and local businesses, launched a six-week “Summer Safety Pilot Program.”
The “Summer Safety Pilot Program” addresses ongoing concerns related to reckless driving, loud music, loitering, underage drinking, open intoxicants and late-night disruptive behaviors.
“The pilot program will include increased visibility and coordination among stakeholders, enhanced enforcement of existing ordinances by the Milwaukee Police Department, public safety messaging and business engagement efforts,” Alderman Brower said.
This morning, Monday, June 29, Alderman Brower announced an additional measure to be included in the pilot program: parking restrictions along Brady Street.
This restriction will be along Brady St. from Humboldt to Farwell, beginning this July 4 weekend.
Parking will be prohibited on this stretch of Brady St. from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for the duration of the pilot. They will examine the effectiveness of these restrictions once the program, which is scheduled to last six weeks, concludes.
