UWM Clinical Psychology Professor Stacey Nye continues her podcasting journey by tackling an unsolved murder case that hits close to home.

In late August, Nye and her co-host set out to explore a murder in Morton Grove, Illinois. The podcast “Murder in Morton Grove” explores the murder mystery of two high school seniors in Nye’s class.

This is not a typical story to Nye, but one that has sat with her throughout her adult life.

“My colleague said let’s do a true crime podcast,” said Nye. “I was a little skeptical at first, but then I remembered the perfect case that remains unsolved.”

Since the podcast’s introduction, Nye and her colleague have collected information from the victims’ families, friends, news reporters, and anonymous tipsters.

“ …there have been some interesting obstacles,” said Nye. “This is a cold case, memories are not what they used to be, and people have passed away.”

She also reveals that this podcast is unique compared to her others. “Murder in Morton Grove” is a re-telling of a narrative of events interlocked with personal interpretations.

While this may be Nye’s first true-crime podcast, she is no stranger to the art of podcasting. She has also released two other podcasts, “Psychoanalyzing” and “Sh*t That Happens to Me.”

Why did Nye Start the Podcast?

“My students got me listening to ‘My Favorite Murder’ podcast which at the time was very popular,” said Nye. “They used to do live shows around the world and they would call on someone from the audience to tell a hometown murder. One time they came to Milwaukee and I was the person they called on.”

From then on, Nye came to the conclusion that she could tell a good story. It wasn’t just the experience of sharing the story, but the feeling of piquing an audience’s interest.

Nye was also asked how she brings her career and expertise to life in her shows.

“I felt like I was well-suited to do this, because I not only have the connection but have an understanding and empathetic response,” said Nye.

For the last few years, Nye has dedicated valued time to creating podcasts that deep-dive into different topics. So we must wonder what’s been her favorite part of it all.

“I want to say podcasting is just very fun for me,” said Nye. “I’ve loved doing the psychoanalyzing podcast… especially learning about the level of work, and the time and detail.”

In the meantime and to answer the question on everyone’s mind, you can expect a new episode of “Murder in Morton Grove” to come out in the spring.
