The Washington Redskins announced on July 3rd that they will “undergo a thorough review” of the team name. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a source said that a name change is likely to happen.

The Washington franchise has used the name since 1933.

Recent events in the country stemming from the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis have shed light on the issues of social justice and have brought attention to a possible name change for the franchise.

The naming rights of the team stadium belong to FedEx, and they requested that the team change their name. According to Adweek, Washington sponsors PepsiCo and Nike may cut ties as well, unless a change is made to the name.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been speaking with Washington’s owner Dan Snyder regarding the name change and was reportedly “supportive of this important step.” Snyder and Head coach Ron Rivera among others are leading the change. Rivera is currently the only Hispanic head coach in the National Football League.

According to reports, the top options for the new name of the franchise include the Red Tails, Warriors, Red Hawks, Federals and Braves.

Recently, the team reported that they plan to have no Native American imagery.

Expert on NFL Business, Andrew Brandt says that it will be almost impossible to get a name change before week one.
