After escaping her home and spending almost two weeks outside in Milwaukee, Buddy the cockatiel was returned to her family today.
A family walking their dog located the eight-month old, female cockatiel near Burns Commons on North Franklin Place. They recognized her from posters her owners put up.
Buddy’s owner Alysa Latona took her to the vet as soon as the bird returned. The vet didn’t find any signs of frostbite, but Buddy does have an injured wing. After being missing for 12 days, Buddy is very healthy, according to Latona.
The Australian-native bird went missing Jan. 27. Latona’s husband had the bird on his shoulder while he was doing laundry in their apartment complex on Milwaukee’s east side. Someone opened a door leading out of the laundry room and into the garage, and Buddy was gone.
“He ran after her,” Latona said, “but, of course, only one of them had wings.”
Latona has had Buddy since May. She notified her vet and Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission, left Buddy’s cage outside with food, hung up posters and searched the area.
Other people came across Buddy as well during her journey. Jessica Tighe tweeted a photo of the bird.
I think this bird got bad directions! But seriously, anyone missing a cockatiel? This friendly fella is in Burns Commons right now on Milwaukee’s east side. @WiscHumane @EastSideMke pic.twitter.com/27EfN4e4rK
